What is anaphylatic?

Anaphylatic is Leonardo Bighetti’s personal blog, abusing on the anaphylaxis typo and general idea.

Formal definition

anaphylaxis (ana·phy·lax·is) – (an”ə-fə-lak´sis) [ana- + phylaxis]

  1. systemic or generalized anaphylaxis; a type I hypersensitivity reaction in which exposure of a sensitized individual to a specific antigen or hapten results in urticaria, pruritus, and angioedema, followed by vascular collapse and shock and often accompanied by life-threatening respiratory distress. Common agents causing anaphylaxis include Hymenoptera venom, pollen extracts, certain foods, horse and rabbit sera, heterologous enzymes and hormones, and certain drugs, such as penicillin and lidocaine. Ouch.
  2. a general term originally applied to the situation in which exposure to a toxin resulted not in development of immunity (prophylaxis) but in hypersensitivity. The term was extended to include all cases of systemic anaphylaxis in response to foreign antigens and also to include a variety of experimental models, e.g., passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis has now been subsumed under the more general concept of type I (immediate) hypersensitivity.

Who is behind Anaphylatic?

My name is Leonardo Bighetti. I was born in December 1984, in a suburban town on the outskirts of São Paulo, Brazil, and have been fused to the web since its conception, usually dabbling under numerous aliases, such as darkside and shivamib and hopelessly developing and designing applications, ranging from desktop, compiled to scripting code.

Got my B.S. in Computer Science in July/06, at FEI, a notorious Brazilian university, while working as a Systems Analyst for Monsanto. Left the corporate world after graduation and joined Inova, a small web2.0ish startup and one of the best hacker workshops I’ve ever been to. Left in Feb/07 to pursue telecommuting freelance work, focusing on Ruby on Rails apps.

An idiot programmer

I am an idiot. That has profoundly affected the way I code. Everything must be simple enough for a child to understand, and even then, I struggle.

Being an idiot has forced me to RefactorMercilessly. If I don’t, there’s no chance of my understanding my code. And if I don’t understand my code, there’s no chance of my getting it to work.

I’ve seen people who can solve complex problems, and I admire them. Alas, I’m not one of them. So whenever I have to solve a complex problem, I make it simple first.

If I can’t make a problem simple, it’s usually because someone else insists that it remain complex. In that case, I have to wait for someone smart to fix it (thank you, smart person), or for someone to change their mind and allow me to make the problem simple.

Still, some insist that I’m a PragmaticProgrammer instead, which I must assume is a Good Thing.

Stuff I’ve been involved in

Most of them have changed – sometimes to a rather bizarre degree – from when I worked with it.
